La Basse-Cour granary
Until 1999, la Basse-Cour was a working farm, with some of the outbuildings believed to date back to the early 1600s. The granary was by no means the oldest building, and it showed signs of being lived in at some time, making it a prime candidate for modernising.
Over the winter of 2004-2005 we converted it into a spacious one-bedroom flat. The specification included 18 inches of insulation on every exterior wall and lining the roof. The result is a cosy and quiet space when it's cold and a cool and shady one when it's hot.
The bedroom is large enough to accommodate a seating area - windows look out over the courtyard and beyond to the far side of the shallow valley. In the summer the late evening sunshine creates a warm glow upstairs. It's an ideal place to savour a cool glass of local cider and make plans for the next day.
